The wedding bells for Lorna and Tristan Blake toll doom right as the honeymoon begins with an unexpected turn in Tristan’s health. While World War II winds down, Lorna receives a letter from the War Department informing her that the brotherr she thought killed in action is still alive. She is overjoyed, but his return will dredge up a devastating secret about their parents’ tragic death –a secret that could destroy her new marriage and threaten her husband’s physical and mental well-being. What unfolds is balancing act of keeping the faith and shattering the pieces of the life she’s worked so hard to put back together.
The story of Lorna and Tristan picks up almost immediately after the end of the first book. Lorna and Tristan have overcome so much. They’ve settled into a life of love where they can put the past behind them. But as they attempt to do so, but’s of the past continue to haunt them. Their love is strong, however, and capable of overcoming any trial.
The book does a good job of filling in some gaps from the first novel. We get to see more of Tristans recovery from alcohol dependence and the mystery behind Lorna’s brother’s experience in the war.
The book is quite episodic in nature with few conflicts big enough to disrupt the overall happy mood. Instead, it’s a story of family and connection. The writing creates lovely character interactions that fuel the positive message.
In short, this is a good book to remind you that happiness and love exist. They can move us through the worst of times and help us to build better futures. It made for a very inspiring Sunday read.
