Do you remember that moment you stopped believing in Santa Claus?
When nine-year-old Mille suddenly no longer believes in Santa Claus, it turns the house upside down.
Her mother, Stella, is in a pickle as the hunt to find Santa Claus unearths some family secrets.
Christmas is at risk!
And there’s only one person who can save it.
I wasn’t expecting this book to leave me with so many conflicting emotions. Stella is one of those few true believers whose love for Santa Claus never faded. But as he daughter begins to question and her husband reveals his non-believing side, she’s suddenly questioning herself and all her long-held truisms. In the end, she and her family have to begin to accept that the world can look different to each person and yet still hold magic.
The story was lovely but also bittersweet. I found parallels to my friends who married inside a faith only to be abandoned in their faith by family, friends and children. There’s a sense of loneliness when others reject the foundation of your life that’s difficult to express, which is why seeing it in a story is both poignant and terrifying. I didn’t have answers for Stella and I don’t have answers for my friends in these situations - and I live in fear of having to join them in their emptying space.
But whether it’s belief in God or science or a political system or Santa, the sands are shifting beneath our feet. We aren’t likely to live in the comfy beliefs of our childhood for very long. So find what binds you to your people and love it while it lasts without creating a hammer of belief that drives wedges between people - and then create space for inevitable change.
A surprisingly thoughtful book that explores dozens of modern and unexpected themes. Definitely worth some reflection and pondering in between batches of Christmas cookies.
(And no matter what...I will always be a true believer.)
