It’s two days before Christmas - and Evie Harris finds herself both manless and jobless. After a chance encounter with handsome Greg (and egged on by her toy-boy-eating friend, Bea) she agrees to work at a homeless shelter on Christmas Day.
Striking up an unlikely friendship with homeless Yves, Evie begins an unwitting journey of spiritual awakening, all set against the sparkling winter backdrop of London landmarks.
A New Year’s Eve revelation is on its way . . . but will it leave Evie with a happy heart, or will she allow the pre-Christmas past to dictate her future?
Christmas is the season of charity, or so we like to believe. For Evie, her desire to spend a little time giving results in a significant change of fortune.
Evie is plucky enough to be likable and it's easy to feel sorry for her after she's rudely dumped by her boyfriend days before Christmas. The cast that surrounds her varies in likability - I loved fellow volunteer Greg, for example, but found her best friend, Bea, annoying in her vapid and dismissive approach to health and life.
Yves, the homeless guru, hit me more neutrally, but probably because his loosely-veiled proselyting of the Law of Attraction conflicted with my more practical views of life. On the other hand, as the book wandered through London at Christmastime, I was reminded of why the holidays are so lovely - but only if we allow them to be. The lights, glitter, gifts, and music can bathe us in positive, happy images that distract us from our troubles, but only if we choose to let go and get carried away by the spirit of the season.
The book was a little preachy for me, but it was also joyous. Evie deserved her happy ending and I was happy that it came. It's a worthy companion to a holiday, especially if you need reminding to look up and enjoy the lights while they last.
