Reflected Destinies

Laura is happy and content, she has a new boyfriend and loves her job teaching primary school pupils in London.  But when she inherits a rundown house from a stranger on her 30th birthday, memories of her prom night come flooding back, memories of a scary encounter and an antique mirror in the very same house.

Laura visits the house with all its secrets and as she unravels the clues she reveals the biggest secret of all: her own destiny.  But how can you change the future if it’s already written in the past?

Review

I’ve never entirely known whether I liked Somewhere In Time or not. It’s so sad, so painful - and yet so beautiful. I’m enthralled by the romance yet gutted by the reality.

And so it was with Reflected Destinies. The book is lovely, full of that deep romance that enchants and thrills. But then there is the reality that time travel is a cruel mistress. I won’t spoil the details, of course, except to say that my inner pragmatist wondered if she wouldn’t be wiser to sell the mirror and install Tinder.

But that’s not the point, is it?

In the end, Reflected Destinies is a beautiful first novel despite normal first book glitches. I had lots of feels and I’m not sure how I’d rank this book, really. I will say that if your copies of Outlander and Time Travellers Wife are bent and tear-soaked - and if you kept a VCR for way too long just to revisit Christopher Reeves weepy final scene - then Reflected Destinies will be a happy dose of new blood to revive even the most withering romantic soul.
