Review: The Holiday Cruise

September 15, 2018

The Holiday Cruise

As if it weren’t enough to be cheated on by her husband of ten years, Yorkshire lass Hannah Davis is losing her beauty salon business too. Luckily, her big sister is there to pick up the pieces, but Hannah is desperate to find some independence.

Impulsively, Hannah applies for a spa job…on a cruise ship! Christmas in the Caribbean, springtime in the Mediterranean, what’s not to like? But, despite being in her thirties, Hannah has never done anything on her own before, and she’s terrified.

As the ship sets sail, Hannah has never been further from home…or closer to discovering who she is and who she wants to be.

Review

Some books just find you on the right day. This one hit me in the very day I needed a vicarious cruise around the world. I found the premise delightful, exactly what i needed for a complicated week.

The book follows Hannah, a hapless but relatable woman who gloriously blasts apart  along with her marriage. Hannah’s sister rushes in to rescue by pushing Hannah into a job on a cruise ship. Hannah finds her balance as she goes from port to port. Eventually, love finds her even though she doesn’t have an address.

There were moments that were both real and annoying - for example, the protagonist spends a good amount of time lamenting her cellulite and trying to "fix" herself (since we all know that it is somehow the woman's fault if the man in the relationship can't control his peenie-weenie) and I was glad that I wasn't holding a flammable book anytime she wanted her husband back - but these were also real and poignant moments that most women go through (however philosophically annoying they may be).

I definitely classify this as happy-for-now romance and it fit the bill for me on the day I needed it. The book is escapist fare in every way. So load it up on the kindle for that day when you need an extra dose of far-away with a nice, happy ending.
