Gritty. Absorbing. Difficult. Beautiful. It’s not hard to find descriptors for this exceptional - but hard to read - novel. Charlie, the protagonist, has to come of age in some horrible circumstances. His mother seems eager to force suffering upon him so that he toughens up. But Charlie attempts to be resilient, even when his choices lead him into more suffering.
Literature isn’t intended to make you comfortable and this book doesn’t. It will leave you questioning so many of your beliefs and biases (and reaffirming a few). It will change you. That’s a good thing. Because, as Charlie proves, our comfort may come at the cost of another’s discomfort.
