Review: Rebel at Pennington's
One woman's journey to find herself and help secure the vote. Perfect for the fans of the TV series Mr Selfridge and The Paradise.
1911 Bath. Banished from her ancestral home, passionate suffrage campaigner, Esther Stanbury works as a window dresser in Pennington's Department Store. She has hopes and dreams for women's progression and will do anything to help secure the vote.
Owner of the prestigious Phoenix Hotel, Lawrence Culford has what most would view as a successful life. But Lawrence is harbouring shame, resentment and an anger that threatens his future happiness.
When Esther and Lawrence meet their mutual understanding of life's challenges unites them and they are drawn to the possibility of a life of love that neither thought existed.
With the Coronation of King-Emperor George V looming, the atmosphere in Bath is building to fever pitch, as is the suffragists' determination to secure the vote.
Will Esther's rebellious nature lead her to ruin or can they overcome their pasts and look to build a future together?
Oh, I love this series! Everything from the politics to the romance was spot-on perfect. Rachel Brimble really slammed it out of the park with this installment.
Esther is a heroine for her (and our) times. She's dead-set on getting the vote to women, and she'll use every bit of talent or power she has to see history turn this vital corner.
Lawrence is grieving his first wife, and unsure if he wants to open his life to another woman, but he can't resist being drawn to Esther (who could?!). His story unfolds slowly, reminding us all that people are rarely fully seen in a single conversation.
One of my favorite parts of this book was that the romance wasn't overplayed. Lawrence and Esther like each other and The author allows them to be friends even as they doubt their willingness to turn friendship into something deeper. Ms. Brimble also resists the urge to make the men one-note she-woman vote-haters. Instead, there's plenty of complexity that allows the reader to explore the ideas and love the characters.
I joked on Twitter that I want BBC to pick this up once Poldark ends. This installment would be a worthy addition to the Masterpiece lineup with its complex, interesting characters, well-constructed plot and fantastic setting.
