Review: There's Something About a Cowboy
Rule #1: No Dating Cowboys.
A fake fiancé doesn’t count, right? Oh boy . . .
Amy Weaver is tired of her dad meddling in her love life. Fed up, she hires an actor to play the part of her fake cowboy fiancé when she goes home for her grandpa’s ninetieth birthday. Sure, Luke Jenkins has got looks, charm, and muscular legs, but this is business, pure and simple. Things are fine and dandy until she finds out he’s a real cowboy, not an actor. Now, she’s stuck between a rock and his chiseled jawline, falling faster than a sack of horseshoes. How the heck is Amy supposed to ignore the sparks between them and stick to her rule of not dating cowboys? All bets are off.
There’s something about a Rich Amooi novel! He has an unmistakable sense of humor and gift of character. Every time I read a claim that men can’t write women, I want to hand the writer a novel by Rich Amooi. The flow of humor and intellect paired with charm makes for really enjoyable romantic comedy.
The main failing in this book is in its premise. The reasons why the heroine won’t give in to the flawless and charming hero are poorly substantiated so it’s hard to understand the will-they-won’t-they. I was glad for the quick resolution at the end since there wasn’t much reason for them not to be together. I also have to admit that I am sometimes curious about the male perspectives in the novel. I’m a little weirded out by the idea that men really do think women they love are “sweet” since it’s such a girlish word (and I never really thought Amy was “sweet”).
But those are minor complaints. This is a fun romp. I really identified with the faux-cowboy gripes in the first chapter (I grew up in idah - we had a lot to say about fake cowboys). I enjoyed the banter and the setting and I thought there was enough plot to drive the story. It’s a great bit of escapist fare for days when you’ve had a little too much reality.
