Review: On the Boardwalk

Autumn Antics (The Boardwalk by the Sea Book 2)

Being a part-time hand model can be tricky, especially when you have to deal with prima donnas like Megan Knight, a reality star whose meteoric rise has surprised everyone. Bella is happiest running her tiny antique business from the

front room of her cottage on the boardwalk. To ensure she has enough income coming in, she also rents out two of her bedrooms and is hiding a secret crush on one of her lodgers. His name is Jack and he also happens to be her best friend Sacha’s brother.

If life wasn’t complicated enough, her world-travelling mother appears on her doorstep on the same evening that Jack’s ex-fiancée arrives on the boardwalk determined to win him back. Bella has a lot of thinking to do and soon discovers that not all gems sparkle.

The main thing I require to fall in love with a story is a deserving heroine. This book gave me that from page 1. Bella is adorable. She’s smart and resourceful without being too much of either. Her insecurities feel real and believable without feeling too desperate or convenient. I love Bella. She was so fun to read. I devoured her story in fewer than two hours and could have read on happily.

Perhaps my only complaint with the story was that the romance delays felt forced. I couldn’t see any reason why one honest conversation couldn’t have given our love birds a happy relationship by chapter 3. There was plenty of non-romance heart to carry the story without the romantic tension.

My favorite part of the story was the relationships between the female leads and the actress who comes to town. The way that friendship can heal all hearts was beautifully constructed and I had tears in my eyes several times. The conclusion felt realistic, neither perfectly happy nor perfectly sad.

This is a wonderful autumn read, exactly what I needed as the cold weather set in. It’s an nice walk on the beach with loved ones as the air crisps your cheeks and the holidays twinkle on the horizon. I highly recommend this one.
