Author Interview: Laura Beers
Do you wonder what lurks in the shadows of Regency novels? Laura Beers has an answer for you in the delightfully intriguing novel, Saving Shadow. Her heroine is a spy in her majesty's service who doesn't hesitate to kill when a little death is necessary.
I found the swapped gender roles in the book to be really interesting. Adding darker tinges to the Regency beauty kept me intrigued as we moved through a classic love story.
I've enjoyed getting to know Laura in the writer's community. She has a great sense of humor that bleeds on the page and makes her a joy to know. I'm excited to help her promote her book (and herself) as she launches The Beckett Files.
Author Interview plus Q&A
What is your process for writing a novel?
I have a basic outline in my head but then I let the story develop. I love witty banter so I am consistently encouraging dialogue to entertain the reader.
What kind of research did you do for this novel? Is there any detail you found in your research that particularly interested you?
I love history!! I find it fascinating and it can transport you into another time. Sadly, I majored in Construction Management at BYU and I did not have time to take additional history courses. So...now I write and research the Regency time period. One day, I will travel to England and Scotland.
How do you feel that you changed as a person and/or writer after completing this work?
I majored in Construction Management at [BYU] and I have never excelled at writing. In my industry, business writing was used and descriptions were frowned upon. It took me a long time to have the confidence to even begin writing my book. Luckily, I had smart friends who were talented in English and they took pity on me (in exchange for delicious meals at In & Out and Sonic) I still have insecurities about my writing, but I have a tremendous editor who supports me.
What is your favorite go-to advice for an emerging writer?
Just write and don't stop. Although, sometimes I do stop and go get a refreshing Dr. Pepper then I start up again.
What's next for you? Do you have any works in progress?
Yes, my second book in The Beckett Files series is coming out. It is called, A Peculiar Courtship. It has spies, intrigue, villains and a wonderful love story.
